What Is a Buffalo Hump?
As we age, our metabolism slows and we begin to develop deposits of fat around our body. For most this happens in the usual areas of the abdomen, legs, and buttocks but for some, this excess fat can develop in less common areas.
A buffalo hump is a term most cosmetic surgeons use for the fat that develops on the dorsocervical fat pad, which sits at the base of the back of the neck and between the shoulders. If you have a hump at the base of your neck, it’s recommended that you see a medical doctor first to determine if it’s caused by a medical condition or if liposuction is the right solution for you.
The most common cause of this fatty development is obesity. However, other lifestyle and medical conditions may cause this as well. Some of these causes may include:
- Poor posture, leading to fatty accumulation
- Genetic predisposition to fat in this area
- Cushing’s syndrome, which is associated with an excess of the hormone cortisol
- Osteoporosis
- Medications for HIV such as lipodystrophy
- Tumor or pituitary dysfunction
- Other glandular problems

For many people, diet and exercise alone won’t eliminate the enlarged fat, which forms the buffalo hump, due to the fat that develops being more fibrous than that which develops in other areas. This is because the neck typically contains more scar tissue and other dense materials. In these instances, an incision into the overlying skin and soft tissues may be required to aid in the removal of fat.
During your consultation, Dr. Tirgari will go over the details of the procedure and what you can expect in terms of recovery and results. These will depend on your specific situation, especially the size and density of the fat in this area. After a thorough examination, Dr. Tirgari will decide on the best liposuction technique to use so that he can eliminate this unsightly hump and give you the beautiful, contoured neck you desire. While you may see a slight reduction in the amount of fat in this area after the procedure, results generally take a few weeks up to a couple of months to fully show. Am I the Ideal Candidate?

To be a good candidate for liposuction, you must meet these general qualifications:

- Having firm, elastic skin
- Not currently suffering from any major illnesses or diseases that inhibit healing
- Not currently pregnant or planning on being pregnant in the near future
- Nonsmokers or those who can quit for a significant amount of time prior to and after the procedure
- Those who have positive and realistic expectations for the outcome
