Juvederm is composed of hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance in the skin, muscles and tendons. Most all fillers that are composed of hyaluronic acid are eventually reabsorbed into the skin and patients require follow up visits to maintain the results. Touch up treatments are usually scheduled every 9 to 12 months.

Hyaluronic acid is naturally a liquid substance, which would make the body metabolize the product in less then 24 hours. Juvederm uses a patented cross linked technology that chemically binds the individual chains of the acid, changing it into a a gel form, which lasts for up to one year after the injection.

Avalon Laser uses Juvederm ultra plus XC that already has the numbing agent called lidocaine built into the gel. This greatly increases patient comfort during the procedure. In a recent study by Allergan in 2012 (Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, Volume 11, Issue 4, pages 279–289, December 2012 – abstract), the manufacturer of Juvéderm, has also successfully proven the value of hyaluronic acid in midface volume restoration including the malar region, periorbital regions, and the tear trough areas.

In a recent study conducted by University of Michigan, researches have determined that hyaluronic acid stretches the fiborblasts to stimulate the production of new collagen and also stops the breakdown of existing collagen. This is great news for our Juvederm patients who have been able to achieve stunning aesthetic results with this dermal filler.
